THE Friends of Newport Ship (FONS) marked a year since they moved into their current premises with the launch of a stunning new painting of the Newport Medieval Ship.

The reception was held at the centre’s headquarters at Queensway Meadows, with the facility having attracted 1,100 visitors to date.

Around 60 people were there to view the painting, which was commissioned by the FONS, as it was unveiled by artist Peter Power on Friday.

Mr Power specialises in maritime images and was even commissioned by Prince Charles to paint the Mary Rose.

The painting shows the very latest interpretation, with two views of the ship sailing off Newport with the rising sea mist in the background.

It draws together what is known from the academic and archaeological perspective and what is assumed from the depth of the artist’s experience.

Councillor Charles Ferris, patron of the FONS, said: “We had a good turnout and a lot of interest in the painting. A lot of people were very pleased to meet him.

“I think there’s that support there for the ship, which is very encouraging.”

The centre remains open to the public on Saturdays until December 12. For more information and to order a framed print of the ship, priced at £110, email chair@newportship.org
