MEMBERS of the steelworkers’ union Community from across South Wales will be bringing their Save our Steel campaign to the steps of the Senedd tomorrow in advance of a debate on the steel industry.
Steelworkers from Port Talbot and Llanwern are inviting Assembly Members to join them with their giant Save our Steel banner outside the Senedd at 1pm.
Speaking ahead of the debate, Roy Rickhuss, general secretary of Community, said: “The steel industry in Wales needs all the support it can get, so we welcome the debate taking place. The Welsh Assembly Government has a good track record of backing its steel industry but we need to look at every possibility of delivering more support and opportunities to get through this crisis and create a sustainable future for Welsh steel making."
He added: “The Welsh Assembly Government can play a role in advocating for both the UK government and UK manufacturers to buy Welsh steel. This could start with Tata using more steel from its South Wales plants to supply its Jaguar Land Rover business, which only sources around 30% of its steel within the UK.”
“It’s only through a fully co-ordinated approach from governments, the industry and domestic consumers of UK steel that we will secure the future of this vital foundation industry.”
