UPDATE: 5.10pm

The school will remain closed on Monday as work continues to remove the tree.

A Torfaen council spokesman said: “Council staff are currently on site removing the tree and we expect this work to be completed over the weekend. Once the area has been made safe, and the tree has been removed, the building will be assessed by a structural engineer and we will have a better understanding of the overall damage.

“The school will remain closed to staff and pupils on Monday while this work takes place.”

UPDATE: 10.35am

The school's head teacher Mike Coady has said that nobody was hurt by the falling tree and they expected to reopen next week.

He said it was a 'pretty horrific' experience, but that he was 'relieved' that it didn't happen when the school children were there.

"It came down in the middle of the night, around 1am, and nobody was hurt by it," he said.

"Because of the disruption this morning to the school we put children in a safe place and made arrangements for them to go home with parental permission."

He said they didn't know how much damage has been caused, but that the whole experience had already been 'pretty horrific'.

"There is no obvious windows that have caved in, but a bit of water has come into the school.

"We have got people on the roof now cutting branches off.

"We fully expect the school to be open next week.

"I'm just relieved that it didn't happen when the children were here."

Here's what the tree looks like

South Wales Argus:

ST ALBANS RC High School has been closed after a tree fell on it overnight.

One parent said it was an 'absolute tragedy' that the school had been forced to close for the day due to safety reasons.

The tree is believed to have fallen on the science block of the school.

Simon Densham, a tree surgeon from Torfaen council, said the 60ft monkey puzzle tree would be removed today.

"It's smashed a few windows and damaged parts of the roof and parts of a concrete walkway," he said.

"It missed all the power lines, but has hit a few internal cables.

"

A spokesman from the school said: "There will be staff here for students for whom childcare will be an issue.

"Transport will be arranged for students who are already in the school to send them home.

"Please check website for updates.

"To contact the school please phone 01495 765815."
