A DREAM trip to Disneyland Paris is back on the cards after it was cancelled following the horrifying attacks on the French capital in November.

The eighth trip organised by the charity POPSY (Parents of Partially Sighted and Blind Youngsters), was due to take a group of 63 people – mostly from Gwent – to the French city on Saturday, November 14, the day after terrorist gunmen opened fire on its streets.

The coach made it as far as Ashford but had to turn back when they were told the park would be closed on Monday, leaving the group bitterly disappointed.

It took 18 months of fundraising to get the £15,000 needed for the wheelchair-accessible trip.

But now, a number of refunds, combined with some careful budgeting and charitable donations mean the trip can once again go ahead.

Tymandra Blewett-Silcock, from Machen, is the director of the charity.

She set it up as her own daughter, Poppy, is registered blind, and decided she wanted to help other families in a similar position.

She said: “We have been contacted by a church group who sent a £50 cheque, and with some refunds and careful budgeting we have since been able to rearrange the trip for January.”

Newport mum Ceri Morgan-Morris was on the trip with her family and explained how important the trips are for them.

She said: “It was our first trip to Disneyland, we had been looking forward to it for a year.

“It was so difficult for all the parents to have to break the news to the children.

“We rely on such trips as it is wheelchair-friendly and as the charity organises it all it takes the stress out of it for the parents of disabled children.”
