Gwent Police have confirmed that the man who died in yesterday's crash was a 42-year-old man from Hertfordshire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sun 3 Jan

A MAN died when his car crashed while travelling on the A449 in Monmouthshire.

The road was closed for over six hours following the crash involving the one car.

The Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the scene on the southbound carriageway at 9.37am today and Gwent Police were also in attendance.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said paramedics attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene and they left at 11am.

Gwent Police remained in attendance until late in the afternoon with the southbound carriageway remaining closed for over six hours while an investigation was undertaken.

The A449 southbound closure caused heavy traffic as it was shut between A40 Raglan Interchange and A472 Usk Interchange in Llanllowell.

A diversion remained in place for southbound traffic sending cars on the A40 through Raglan towards Abergavenny and on the A4042 Southbound towards Pontypool, bypassing Cwmbran, joining the M4 at Junction 25a.

The carriageway reopened at 3.45pm.
