1. Pontynewydd Fish Bar, 4 New St, Cwmbran

South Wales Argus:

Pontnewydd Fish Bar has been serving traditional fish and chips to the local community for over 90 years. It has been run by The Hawkins and Dummett family for nine years with help from long-serving staff including Pat Cunningham,whose mother Maisey working in the shop until she was 80.

Manager Elouise Dummett said: “There’s a great sense of community spirit here at Pontnewydd.”

“Generations of families have visited our shop throughout the years, and we all know our loyal customers on a first name basis.”

Fresh cod, plaice and scampi is cooked fresh to order every day, which is prepared by Elouise’s dad Peter, the self confesssed ‘Cod-Father’ of the business.

Mr Dummett said: “Myself, Wend, Paul and El want to thank our loyal customers for all their support.”

3. Carey’s, 1 Heol-Pen-Y-Cae, Ebbw Vale

South Wales Argus:

Carey’s Fish Bar in Glyncoed is a family-run business owned by Amy Carey. Mrs Carey,35, said her family is passionate about food and believes the business is a hit with customers because of their friendly-approach and relationship with customers.

She added: “Our customers are amazing. They have become friends to us and we like to take the time to ask them about their day.”

 

4. Scams (Chip and Fin), Abersychan

South Wales Argus:

Business partners Tracey Scammell and Julie Gill have been running Scam’s Chip and Fin for six years. They pride themselves on their friendly atmosphere and cooking fish fresh to order.

 

5. Sheppards, Cardiff Road, Newport

Julian Allen has been at the helm for 22 years. He said: “you have to be passionate about what you do.”

“It’s all about using quality ingredients and having good staff.”

 

6. Pages Fish and Chips, Woodside Rd, Cwmbran

South Wales Argus:

Established by Jon Page’s grandfather in Sebastopol in 1949, the family has built a reputation for top quality fish and chips. Now run by Jon Page the business expanded and in 2011 opened a restaurant and takeaway in Cwmbran.

 

7. Vacaras, 39 Llanarth St, Newport

South Wales Argus:

Founded in 1888 the family-owned business is run by partners Steve Frost, David Vacara and Alan Edwards. Mr Frost said: “It’s a privilege to appear in the top ten list and nice to be recognised as a good quality fish and chip shop.

 

8. Bettws Fish Bar, Bettws Shopping Centre

South Wales Argus:

The family business was established in 1971 by Piero Belli. His son Marco took over 15 years ago and prides himself on serving sustainably-caught fish from the Bering Sea and using quality products.

Mr Belli said: “It’s about using quality ingredients and the very best of everything from the oil we use to potatoes and fish.”

“It’s is nice to know we are doing something right.
