THE Ebbw Vale Sports Centre is due to re-open today following the collapse of the roof which flooded part of the building on Saturday, February 6.

Heavy rain caused a section of the reception’s roof to fall in, forcing the centre to be evacuated over fears for the safety of the sports centre’s users.

In a phased opening, starting at 5pm today, parts of the complex will re-open including a temporary reception and the outdoor pitches and external changing rooms.

Anthony Hughes, the manager director of Aneurin Leisure who own the centre, said via a blog: “Aneurin Leisure is grateful to all our customers at Ebbw Vale Sports Centre for their patience following the significant flooding incident on February 6.

“We have been undertaking essential and necessary repairs to the centre and this will continue over the coming weeks.”

Tomorrow, the swimming pool and the café are planned to open again, with the health suite and sports hall dependent on final health and safety checks.

On Wednesday, health and safety checks will determine whether the upper floor, which includes the lifestyle studio, the free weights room and dance studio re-open.

Mr Hughes added: “The spin class area requires repairs to be completed and will remain closed next week.

“The main reception will remain closed for the time being as this area sustained the most damage.

“Work will be ongoing to make repairs over the coming weeks, but we will make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum for our customers.

“Once again we would like to thank our customers for their continued support during this time and offer our reassurance that we are committed to re-opening all the facilities at Ebbw Vale Sports Centre as soon as we can,” he said.
