TO celebrate the Oscars, here are eight Gwent locations which have been used in Hollywood films.
Some you may know, but others may surprise you...
1) Trefil Quarry, Blaenau Gwent
Blockbuster Wrath of the Titans (2012), the follow up to Clash of the Titans, was filmed at this quarry, near Tredegar. It’s also been used in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Doctor Who.
2) Caerphilly Castle
Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr dropped into Caerphilly Castle for Restoration (1995), a biography/drama set in the time of Charles II.
3) Caerwent, Monmouthshire
2011 action/adventure film Captain America the First Avenger was partly shot here. The film stars Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson and Dominic Cooper among others.
4) Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent
The valleys town was used in some of the village scenes in The Citadel (1938), which features Rex Harrison who would later go on to My Fair Lady fame. The film’s plot is about a doctor who takes his first job in a Welsh mining town and begins to wonder at the persistent cough many of the miners have.
5) Crumlin and Crumlin viaduct, Caerphilly
The town and viaduct were used as filming locations for 1966 action/adventure film Arabesque, featuring stars Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren.
6) Chepstow Castle
Monmouthshire is on screen again in 1977 comedy adventure film Jabberwocky, featuring Michael Palin.
7) The Transporter Bridge, Newport
Shots of the city and Transporter Bridge are brief, but included, in crime thriller Tiger Bay. The plot sounds good too: a 12 year old tomboy witnesses the murder of a woman by her boyfriend but bonds with him and thwarts the police. The film features actress Hayley Mills. (Sadly not Hayley Mills the South Wales Argus reporter).
8) Raglan Castle
Another Monmouthshire castle is used in comedy and fantasy film Time Bandits (1981), which features Sean Connery and John Cleese as Robin Hood. Raglan Castle is meant to be Napoleon’s castle.
