DRUGS ROW: A person who remains unnamed has stated their disappointment at the news that certain seriously ill patients have been refused life-lengthening medication due to costs.

He told me: "When you consider the hard work put in by people completing marathons, half- marathons, mountain climbs, swimming, and much more, to accumulate many thousands of pounds for research into these nasty diseases to help people live better lives, only to be told that the new medication is not available due to cost.

"I, for one, have completed many acts of charity funding, but if it is not going to those who most need it then I am deleting myself from competing."

You hear of life-threatening illnesses among strangers, or even friends, but when they are affecting their own kin, imagine the outcome. So, to the powers that be, please supply the medication much needed.

OVER-50s CLUB: The Bettws Over-50s Wednesday Club at the community centre was started in 1999. Previously it was an over-60s group, and before that it was a senior citizens' club.

The chairman is Mo Jones, the vice-chairman is Joyce, and the secretary is Judy. Mo told me they are 53-strong and have a waiting-list. They meet between 9am and 4pm with early-morning tea and biscuits, have a chat, and any news is left until after lunch at 2pm. That involves any birthday wishes, forthcoming trips, etc.

This year, on April 18, they went to Burnham-on-Sea. On June 20 they go to Harry Ramsden's for lunch before going on to Barry Island for a candyfloss. Then on July 11 it's the Welsh Heritage Museum, August 8 they go to Poole in Dorset, September 19 its Weston-Super-Mare, before a visit on December 5 for bingo and an artiste.

Throughout the year the club had fish and chips from Bettws Fish Bar for lunch. The committee wish to thank Betty and Sue for their unending help for the club, a real credit.

They have two men at present, Dave and Victor, and thanks go to the three Bettws councillors for their financial assistance with regards to annual trips, etc.
