NEWPORT cardboard recycling collections are set to go weekly after an announcement by charity Wastesavers.

The charity, which collects recycling on behalf of Newport City Council, will roll out the changes from June onwards with all Newport householders estimated to receive the service by the end of August.

Changes include Wastesavers being able to collect Tetra Pak (juice cartons) for the first time alongside the introduction of a heavy red sack will be introduced for plastics and cans.

The new system will be rolled out area by area and every household will also receive advance warning of when the changes will affect them.

CEO of Wastesavers, Penny Goodwin, said: “This is going to make recycling simpler, give residents the opportunity to recycle Tetra Pak for the first time and reduce litter problems.

“We will also be changing what goes in each container due to the massive growth in plastic we have collected in recent years.”

Collection days will remain the same for nearly all service users and two weeks notice of changes will be given to residents as their area comes into the new system.

Wastesavers will also upgrade its fleet with new state-of-the-art recycling collection vehicles to help accommodate more cardboard and plastic. They are due for delivery at the end of May.

Wastesavers Communications officer, Phil Hurst, added: “We are urging residents to not change what goes into which box until they get the new leaflets and information direct from us.

“So please don’t change what you are doing until you get a new red bag,” he added.
