MORE than 60 bikers rode to Newport yesterday before crossing the city’s iconic transporter bridge as part of a charity motorcycle ride.
The south Wales branch of the Goldwing Owners Club – open to anyone who owns a Honda Gold Wing motorbike – held their ‘wingding’ event yesterday which comes every two years.
This year’s wingding, which saw riders from all across the UK descend on Gwent, began in Cardiff before weaving through Caerphilly, Newport, Caerleon and Blackwood.
But Jeff Howells, one of the people who organised the day, said the transporter bridge was the “star of the show” with around 15 bikes at a time being taken across on the gondola.
“The riders thought it was wonderful,” he said. “Most of them had never seen anything like it before. They wished we had a bit more time and a lot of them wanted to go across the top."
After crossing the bridge, the motorcyclists rode to Caerleon rugby club. In total Mr Howells estimates the riders covered around 70 miles.
This year the ride was in aid of charity Rowan Tree Cancer Care, based in Mountain Ash.
Mr Howells said he wanted to thank the rugby club and the transporter bridge. “They were absolutely tremendous for us,” he said.
