POLLING stations are open in part of Newport this morning for a council by-election following the death of a councillor.
Popular councillor Ed Townsend represented St Julian's Ward as a Liberal Democrat since 2004 and was the deputy leader of the council from 2008 to 2012.
Mr Townsend, who was described as a 'champion' of the area and completely dedicated to residents, died at his home in May aged 64 following a short illness.
Six candidates representing all major parties are standing in today's by-election.
Standing for the Liberal Democrats is Mr Townsend's wife, Carmel Roseanne Townsend.
Also standing are: Phil Hourahine for Labour; Carol Anne Bader for the Conservatives; Andrew James Byers for UKIP; Chris Priest for Plaid Cymru, and Mirka Johanna Virtanen for the Wales Green Party.
Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm today.
