FIREFIGHTERS from across Gwent are still battling an ongoing fire at a barn in Abertillery.

The blaze at a single storey wooden barn on a farm in the St Illtyd area was reported to the fire service at 7.17pm last night.

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) said that firefighters had saved half of the building as well as half of the 200 tonnes of straw contained within.

Around 90 bales of hay are still ablaze at the scene with crews from Abertillery, Ebbw Vale, Abersychan, Aberbargoed and Brynmawr rotating in shifts to dampen the flames.
