ROCK singer Paul Weller could be in a Jam after lighting up on stage at a Newport concert.
The singer's smoking antics left council bosses red-faced as the gig took place on their own premises at Newport Centre.
A council spokeswoman said the incident would be investigated at a meeting between trading standards officers and venue bosses.
Under the new smoking legislation, Weller could have been handed a £50 on-the-spot fine. Anyone who is prosecuted can face a fine of up to £200.
Bosses at smoke-free premises, such as Newport Centre, could also be liable for a fixed penalty of up to £2,500 for failing to stop someone smoking.
Weller caused a stir among the audience as he and members of his band and entourage smoked several cigarettes during the two-hour set.
The former The Jam singer's indiscretion follows controversy last week when former Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash allegedly lit up at a Velvet Revolver concert in Cardiff.
A council spokeswoman said the ban was working well in Newport, adding: "Although we have not received any formal complaints, we are concerned to hear that there may have been a breach at Newport Centre."
Smoking in public places has been banned in Wales since April 2. A smoking ban is due to be enforced in England from July 1.
