A 47-year-old Pontypool man remains in a critical condition in the University of Wales Hospital after being stabbed in the torso.

Two men, aged 35 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident, which happened at around 3.45am on Mill Court in Hafodyrynys yesterday.

They are currently in police custody.

Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with any information to contact police. Anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to call 101 quoting log number 101 27/12/16 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Llanhilleth Cllr Hedley McCarthy said: “We deplore that anything like this would happen in our close knit community.

"It’s an upsetting thing to happen, especially at this time of the year.”

Argus reporter Niall Griffiths is at the scene.

There is said to be heavy police presence in and around Swffryd, with officers in residental areas and outside The Hafodyrynys Inn.

The police cordon starts at the junction of Mill Court.

A section of the B4471 leading into the village is sectioned off, with a forensics team on the scene.

Traffic attempting to head into the village is being forced to turn around.

We've had reports that the main road through the village of Swffryd is closed, with police cars at both ends. 

Heavy police presence remains in the area, with crime scene investigations said to be underway.

A MAN is in critical condition after receiving serious injuries in the Hafodyrynys area last night.

Two men have been arrested and are currently in custody.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "At 3.43am on December 27, Gwent Police attended an incident in the Hafodyrynys area where a male had  received serious injuries and is in a critical condition in hospital. 

"Two males aged 35 and 32 have been arrested and are currently in custody.

"Enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward if they have any information relating to this incident.

"Please call 101 and quote log number 0101 - 27/12/16."
