A COUPLE'S unruly birthday celebrations at Newport's Celtic Manor Resort ended with one of them being tasered twice after assaulting a police officer.

Dafydd Williams, 26, and Jade Williams, 27, were celebrating at Newport's Celtic Manor Resort in November when their behaviour resulted in police being called.

The pair, who were in a relationship at the time, were at the hotel to mark Jade Williams' birthday.

Prosecutor James Evans told the court that the couple had received warnings about their behaviour before Gwent Police were called.

“They resorted to using the taser and pepper spray on him,” said Mr Evans. “They fired the taser for a second time and only then were they able to restrain him.”

Mr Evans added that the pair were drunk at this point, having started drinking at around midday.

Jade Williams, of Bryn Aber, Abertridwr, threw a cup of water over a police officer and Dafydd Williams’ attack on another officer led to the latter requiring hospital treatment.

“He suffered swelling to his jaw,” said Mr Evans. “He suffered with loss of sleep, long periods of pain and discomfort, and reduction in his confidence as a police officer.”

After their arrest the pair continued their violent and abusive behaviour, with Williams engraving a swear word into the wall of his cell.

Gareth Williams, defending Dafydd Williams, of Cefn Ilan Road, also Abertridwr, said that his client had shown remorse after sobering up, writing an apology letter to the hotel and the police.

“The behaviour at the Celtic Manor was absolutely appalling,” said Gareth Williams. “He went there as a treat, there was over-excitement in relation to going there. On this occasion, he acted arguably out of character. He is not the violent type.”

He added that his defendant has learning difficulties, which may have caused him to act in the way he did.

Defending Jade Williams, barrister Ruth Smith told the court she was "a vulnerable woman" and at the time had mixed alcohol with prescription drugs for mental health problems.

“This was an anticipated treat but unfortunately matters deteriorated and it became an unpleasant experience,” said Ms Smith.

Judge Paul Hopkins QC described the former couple’s behaviour as "truly appalling", highlighting a moment when Jade Williams flashed her breasts at hotel staff after a disagreement in the spa.

“You flew at one of the officers, flailing your arms at you did so,” said Mr Hopkins to Jade Williams, referring to when police were called to their room.

“Your behaviour galvanised Dafydd Williams to begin to behave in the most aggressive manner.”

Dafydd Williams was sentenced to four months in prison after pleading guilty to two charges of affray and a charge of criminal damage.

Jade Williams received a four month prison sentence after pleading guilty to affray, a public order offence, assaulting a police officer, and possession of cannabis.

Both will be released on licence halfway through their sentences.

Local Policing Commander Superintendent Glyn Fernquest said: “Assaults on officers simply doing their jobs is never acceptable and it is encouraging to see the courts have handed out custodial sentences on this occasion.

“I know that we can continue to count on the support and assistance from our communities while we carry out our duties.”
