A SOUTH Wales East AM has this week called for a Gwent town to have improved transport links.

Steffan Lewis of Plaid Cymru questioned the Welsh Labour Government on Tuesday over the lack of progress in plans to reopen the railway station in Abertillery as part of the Metro scheme.

He said: “A number of people from the area have written to me to express their frustration at the lack of transport links in Blaenau Gwent at night time. The last train from Cardiff stops at Llanhilleth and there are no other public transport links available to travel further up the valley to Abertillery. This leaves taxis as the only option.”

Highlighting the current lack of public transport links, especially at night, Steffan Lewis AM called on the Welsh Labour Government to provide a bus service until the Metro is complete.

He added: “Reopening the station in Abertillery is part of the Metro plan, but we have seen little concrete development so far. I urge the Welsh Government to push ahead with the proposal and to keep the community updated on their progress.

“While we wait for progress to be made in reopening the railway station, it is important that the Welsh Government works alongside the local authority to provide a bus service.”
