LAST week we featured a picture of the Ice Fair at the Market Hall, Abergavenny. This photo was located in Abergavenny Past and Present by I M Morgan.

The Ice Fair festival began in the millennium year and was a favourite with children. There was a range of entertainment on offer including jugglers, magicians, acrobats and a small ice rink.

The market hall was also crucial in the daily life for people in Abergavenny. From medieval time to present day, buildings have prospered and vanished but the market has guaranteed the advancement of the town as the commercial centre for the neighbouring countryside.

On a Tuesday, Friday and Saturday the general market takes place with tradesmen selling a range of products from local produce to finely constructed pieces of art.

Unfortunately, after 150 successful years, the cattle market held its last live stock sale at the hall on December 10 2013 which was moved to Monmouthshire Livestock Centre, Bryngwyn.

The 'now' photo shows the crowds at the popular Abergavenny Food Festival which takes place annually at the Market Hall.

The event will be taking place this year on September 16-17.
