REHEARSALS are taking place for a school’s arts project which will fuse Welsh culture with Romani culture.
Maindee Primary School have secured an Arts Council Wales grant to carry out the project which will include traditional Welsh music and dance along with similar traditions of the Roma children who now attend the school.
The focus will be on traditional Welsh music and dance and seek to uncover similar traditions of the Roma community.
The children will learn traditional Welsh clog dancing, while clogs will be produced by artisan Welsh clog maker Trefor Owen.
Welsh costume maker Catherine Davies will help pupils explore costume as an expression of identity, combining the styles of traditional dress from different countries.
The project will then be presented in a music an dance event on March 27 at Newport’s Riverfront Theatre.
