TWENTY-TWO suggestions for alternative routes for the M4 relief road have been submitted to the Welsh Government as week four of a public inquiry into the scheme gets under way.

Following the launch of the public inquiry into plans for the M4 corridor around Newport last month, which is expected to run up until July, a public notice has confirmed the number of different plans put forward by objectors.

The notice also contains a list of land which is set for compulsory purchase in the Monmouthshire communities of Magor and Undy.

Of the 22 alternative suggestions, the identities of the objector or objectors was not included in the Welsh Government public notice.

The suggested alternatives routes put forward on the public notice are:

• One – blue route – improvements to the Newport A48 Southern Distributor Route and A4810 between the M4 junction 28 and 23A, including the link to 24.

• Two – blue route phase one – improvements to the Newport A48 Southern Distributor Route and A4810 between M4 junction 28 and 23A only.

• Three – green route – west of Wilcrick route and the M48 and B4245 connection.

• Four – north and west of Wilcrick route.

• Five – move part of junction 23 between Rogiet and Caldicot.

• Six – M48 and B4245 and Severn Tunnel Junction station connection.

• Seven – direct access to the Severn Tunnel Junction station from junction 23.

• Eight to 11 – Connections to junction 23A.

• 12 – move main alignment south at Meadows Road.

• 13-16 – northern dock routes one to four.

• 17 – remove Docks Way junction and link.

•18 – free flow junction 23 and connection at junction 23A – 2006 TR111 route.

•19 – widening of existing M4 including Brynglas Tunnels.

•20 – tunnel from Magor to Castleton.

•21 – south of Magor route

•22 – closure of existing M4 junctions.

A brochure, containing plans of the suggested alternatives, is on display in Monmouthshire’s County Hall, Innovation House in Magor, Newport Civic Centre, Newport Central Library, Lysaght Institute in Newport and in Cardiff’s Cathays Park.
