A MUM whose daughter has a life-limiting condition has won the Carer Award in our Pride of Gwent series.

Annie Wills, who lives in Old Cwmbran, was nominated for the award for “going all out” for her daughter, Alexandra Jones, who has the life-limiting condition Ataxia-Telangiectasia.

The 72-year-old said: “My daughter’s illness means she relies on a wheelchair.

“She can also have speech and swallowing problems.

“It hasn’t been nice for her.

“She developed the illness a number of years ago.”

Mrs Wills, who works part-time at the accountants Steve Turzynski & Co and is also a breast cancer survivor, said that it was her other daughter, Terrie, who nominated her for the Carer Award.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” said Mrs Wills, “so when I found out it came as a bit of a surprise.

“I did think ‘why me?’ because as a mum you do what you do without questioning anything.”

“I would do what ever it takes to make my daughter’s life easier.”

The mother-of-three said she visits and cares for her daughter “mostly every day”.

She said: “I’m there all day on a Thursday and I’m currently painting for her.

“My daughter enjoys going out so I take her out and arrange things like hospital appointments.”

When discovering that she had won the Carer Award, Mrs Wills said she was “not sure how she felt”.

“I felt in the beginning that if anyone should win the award it should be my daughter, “ said Mrs Wills.

“But some people say that I do wonders and I have two other daughters who also say that I go all out for Alexandra.

“As I said before I would do anything for my daughter to make her life easier.

“But now I think it is amazing.”

The most important thing with winning the award for Mrs Jones is having realised how much she is “appreciated”.

She said: “For my daughters to have done this clearly shows how much they think of me.

“I’m really appreciative and thankful for this.”

Mrs Wills will receive her award at a special event at the Coldra Court Hotel, on Friday, March, 31

The overall Pride of Gwent Award winner will also be announced on the night.
