AFTER travelling more than 10,000 miles from the States to watch his side, a Newport County fan has spoken about his “amazing experience”.

Gordon Grafft, 25, made the transatlantic journey from California to London on Friday before travelling down on the bus to watch the match against Notts County.

He told the Argus on Saturday that he “fell in love” with the Exiles about a year ago after getting “fed up” following the Premier League.

And having witnessed one of the club’s most defining moments in its history, he said: “This is why I love football - it’s the passion of the fans, the highs and the lows, the sense of what this means to the community.

“The experience was amazing. Everyone was incredibly hospitable and made sure to make this an experience I will never forget.

“The head’s definitely had better mornings, but that’s why I booked the return flight for tomorrow and not today!”

Mr Grafft admitted to being nervous when booking the trip but found that the community treated him as “one of their own”.

And come the end of a thrilling 90 minutes, the corporate attorney found himself running out of the Hazell Stand and onto the Rodney Parade pitch for his first pitch invasion.

He said: “You could see how much the win meant to everyone and seeing Sid (Nelson) and Jazzi (Barnum-Bobb) sitting on people’s shoulders and leading songs was brilliant.

“The players were also great - I got to meet Flynny before the game and hung out with the team after the match. I was certainly not expecting any of that when I got here.”

Mr Grafft also added that he was unsure how he would explain the experience to friends, particular his friend with whom he runs the Newport County USA fan club.

He said: “I know Sean, who runs the page with me but couldn’t make it, is really really jealous of it all.

“But when I get to work and people start asking “how was the trip?” - I have no idea how I’ll respond to that or where to even begin.”

Mr Grafft is hoping to return next season for an away game and is hoping that the Stateside fan club will grow.
