THE mayor of Kutaisi, one of Newport’s twinned cities, will be visiting Newport next month.

Members of Newport’s Kutaisi Twinning Association (NKTA) visited Kutaisi, in Georgia, last year to celebrate 25 years of the cities’ twinning.

While there, members of the association visited Kutaisi’s main street, renamed to Newport Street 15 years ago.

It has now been announced that Shota Murgulia, the mayor of Kutaisi, will be visiting Newport between Sunday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 21, when he will be leaving to go to London for a visit.

Sonia Fisher, from NKTA, said: “Accompanying him will be his wife Teona Shekiladze and Councillor Davit Tsitaishvili from Kutaisi city council.

“They will be with Vladimer Jghamadze, head of fire and emergency services, and Mr David Megrelishvili, head of international relations at Projects Division.”

Mrs Fisher said the Georgian ambassador in the UK, Tamar Beruchashvili, has also requested a visit to Newport while she is in the area attending talks at the Welsh Assembly.

She said the delegation from Kutaisi and the ambassador will be visiting Newport Civic Centre to meet the leader of the council Cllr Debbie Wilcox and other representatives on Tuesday, June 20.
