TRIBUTES have been paid to a former GP at a Newport surgery who died last month.

Dr Denis Morgan died at his home in Llangybi on Monday June 26, having retired from the Richmond Clinic in Caerleon Road in 2010 after almost 37 years of service. He was 69.

The former GP also held weekly clinics at the Royal Gwent Hospital.

His funeral will take place on Thursday, at the Priory Church of St Mary in Usk.

The hearse will pass by his former clinic at 1.45pm for former patients and colleagues to pay their respects.

Dr Morgan is survived by his wife Gill, who he met as a staff nurse and married on April 3, 1972, their two children, Sarah and Richard, and their four grandchildren, Katie, Stanley, Saffy and Bette.

Dr Morgan’s son said: “He was often described as a good, old-fashioned doctor who took the time to listen to patients.

“Even when he broke his heel, he continued to make house calls on his crutches, replacing his traditional case with a ruck sack.

“He was well known in Llangybi for his meringues which he would make for fundraising and charity events, including the annual garden trail for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

He added that his father was an active member of the church in Llangybi and served as a church warden for a number of years.

The funeral will take place at 2.30pm, before heading to Gwent Crematorium.
