IN A DANCE studio in the Riverfront; 17 women stretch and bend as they warm up for their weekly dance class.

Run by Rubicon Dance, the Riverfront Ravers meet weekly at the Newport arts venue. The class is described as “a dance class for dancers over 50 who are every bit as young as they feel”.

It its refreshing to have exercise related classes for people over 50 that breaks the perception that it should be easy, slow and relaxing.

Dance teacher Emily Pritchard who originally comes from Abergavenny, has been dancing for 23 years and a dance teacher for six years.

She said: “People often think that when they get to a certain age that they can’t do something, but you can often do more than you think you could.

“I would always rather people found it a bit challenging and work to achieve it than think they could have done it at home. It’s about providing something for everyone.”

I am the youngest in the class, but that doesn’t mean that I am the best, I am one step behind most people who have clearly been coming for some time.

The woman in front of me, who I later find out is in her mid-70s, is quick on her feet and graceful. I plod about and try to keep up with their moves. Even the warm-up has me breaking a sweat.

Although the class is open to men, on this occasion the class is made up of women. Some live near the Riverfront while others have travelled from further away to take part.

The class, which operates on a term basis but anyone can join at any time, have been learning a routine and although it takes a few attempts to get it right - I manage to just about keep up.

As with any dance class you have different abilities, but everyone can dance and move at their own pace and moves are adaptable to whether a person wants to go as wild or as relaxed as they like. Some go all out when they get to freestyle, while others keep their moves simpler but expressive.

Everyone interprets the moves in their own unique way.

She adds that music is also an important element of the class.

“Music is very important,” Ms Pritchard said, “because I set the tone. I use a variety and I remember asking what people wanted, but they said they liked what I play.

“Dance brings so many things together like movement, co-ordination, memory, timing, it’s rhythm, and you move your body in a way that you just don’t do in any other context and that’s what makes it so interesting.

“There’s something about moving with a group of people to music that can provide a bit of an escape from normal life.”

There is a happy atmosphere in the room, and everyone is friendly and welcoming to a newbie like myself.

Ms Pritchard added: “Anyone can join, this is an open class and I think it’s really fun and it has a sociable aspect to it. A lot of people will come and then they will go for lunch afterwards. It’s not like going to the gym and being on your own, it’s very inclusive.”

Her students clearly agree.

After a gentle warm down of stretches there is plenty of chatter among the class who have visibly enjoyed the one hour session.

Gene Mills, a 74-year-old from Newport, has been attending dance classes for 10 years.

“I enjoy the exercise,” she said. “I enjoy the company and I enjoy the laughs we have.

“It’s just an hour of sheer pleasure. The moves make you think and make your limbs and your brain move.”

Linda Sims, 68, from Bassaleg, said: “You forget everything and you have an hour to relax and enjoy. It’s nice to be able to come and express yourself and clear your mind, it’s great for your all round wellbeing. I just love to dance.

“This class is not about who’s the best or who has danced before, it’s just to come for yourself. We are all friends and we all like to be together.”

Sheila Williams from Maesglas has been coming to the class for six years.

“It’s brilliant,” she said. “We also go to a performance class on a Mondays with Rubicon. We always welcome new people.”

Pat Bowden from Malpas started dance classes when she was 65. Now 73-years-old she still loves dancing.

She said: “I loved all the films I used to watch with my mum but I didn’t have time to do it. I didn’t like exercise, but when I saw dance exercise I thought I would try it. We love to dance and don’t miss it if we can help it.”
