FOOD and drink makers in Abergavenny pitched their products to Morrisons in an attempt to gain a place on the supermarket's shelves, when the new store opens early next year.

Fifteen producers were invited to St Michael's Centre in Abergavenny where they pitched to Morrisons buyers, customers and the Monmouthshire Women's Institute on Friday, October 6.

Morrisons said it wants the new Abergavenny store to be one of the country’s most local supermarkets with some food and drink made ‘just down the road’ from the community and people in the area helping to decide which producers are successful.

Gavin Anderson, who will be the new Morrisons store manager said: "We’ve listened to local residents and they told us they want us to recognise that Abergavenny is a foodie town where local food is important.

"We saw some fantastic local products today and were pleased that so many people from the town turned up to let us know what they thought."

Some of the food makers who attended the event Black Mountain Gold - an artisan chocolate maker based in Abergavenny, Tudor Brewery - a brewer with a selection of ales named after local landmarks and Green and Jenks - Gelato producers from Monmouth.

The Monmouthshire Women’s Institute were also at the event, using their knowledge of the area and expertise to help Morrisons select the best food and drink makers.

The most popular producers from the event will now be invited to meet Morrisons in a final round interview and successful suppliers will see their products stocked in the next store next year.
