A HEALTH club got spinning this week for a special event to raise money for our 125 Appeal.

Inspired by the work of St David’s Hospice Care, the Nuffield Health Club in Cwmbran hosted a 12.5 hour spinathon on Monday to raise money for our anniversary fundraiser.

As well as holding the non-stop spin challenge, they also held a number of classes during the day which people could drop into.

The health club’s deputy general manager, Nyran Bird, led the classes and also took part in the 12.5 hour challenge.

He said: “The event went really well. We held the five classes throughout the day where members and guests attended.

“Three people cycled the whole 12.5 hours, which we did in the club foyer, so that we could generate more interest and get donations.

“The people who took part in the challenge were Joanne Needs, Allison Cawley and myself.

Mr Bird said the challenge was tough but he is glad that they did it for such a worthy cause.

“I didn’t intend to do the 12.5 hours but I thought might as well. I’m glad I did,” he added.

“People came and inspired us to keep going with support.”

On average 600 members use the facilities at the club, which is located on Wilcrick Place, each day.

As well as using the gym’s spin studio, staff were fundraising throughout the gym to raise money for the appeal.

Mr Bird added: “We had 70 people taking part in the classes and everyone had fun and were really enthusiastic.”

So far the club has raised £350, with sponsorship still to be collected by the riders.

He added: “It was a demanding challenge and pretty gruelling. There were points when we wanted to give up but we got through it together. We took in turns to motivate each other.

“The legs and joints were okay, it was our backsides that were sore. It took couple days to get over it.

“It was for a fantastic cause and we are delighted with what we have made so far.”

The 125 Appeal was launched to celebrate the South Wales Argus’ 125th anniversary.

The appeal is raising funds for St David’s Hospice Care to help cover the costs of the huge range of services they deliver.
