VOLUNTEERS from a Pontypool community group got in the Hallowe'en spirit this week as part of a themed litter pick.

Members of the Friends of Pontypool Town (FOPT) group circled Pontypool town centre yesterday dressed as Hallowe'en witches and collected16 bags of rubbish in total.

The event was led by Keep Wales Tidy with support from Bron Afon Community Housing, Torfaen County Borough Council and the Community Rehabilitation Company.

Chair of the FOPT group, Nikola Masters, said: β€œThe council clean the town centre every day but unfortunately people persist in dropping their litter, even though there are plenty of bins around.

"The biggest problem at the moment is cigarette butts – these are really easy to dispose of and there is no excuse for dropping them on the floor".

She added: "We are have a fantastic town and if you want to help us make it even better then please join the Friends of Pontypool Town and get involved.”
