MORE than 750 people have signed a petition calling for improved access at Abergavenny railway station.

The petition, set up by Abergavenny Rail Access Campaign, calls for a new bridge with pedestrian lifts at the station to give full access to both platforms for everyone.

Monmouthshire county councillors are set to discuss the issue at a full council meeting tomorrow, Thursday.

Cllr Martyn Groucutt (Lansdown ward) said he plans to put forward a motion calling for support of the campaign, which he is confident will be supported.

He said: "It is about providing a 21st century service.

"Abergavenny is the second busiest station in Gwent behind Newport and yet people are made to go up these steep steps with heavy luggage.

"It is like the 19th century."

Abergavenny town councillors have also backed the campaign, as it continues to gather support.

The petition states: "We want a bridge with passenger lifts to give full access for disabled passengers, older people and those with heavy luggage."

Network Rail said the Department of Transport has a fund, known as Access for All, which is used to make improvements.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail added: “The present fund for the period 2014 – 2019 is fully allocated, but new funding for additional schemes may be made available from funders and – should this happen – we would be delighted to work with such funder/s to investigate the development of improvements.”
