NEWPORT’S only autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) school was officially opened yesterday (Wed).
Ysgol Bryn Derw, in the Gaer, is a new school in the city and bases itself around a “person-centred approach”.
Members of staff, pupils and councillors came to the school for its official unveiling.
People were treated to a presentation of pictures created by pupils, whose aim it was to show what life is like at the school.
Leader of Newport City Council Cllr Debbie Wilcox officially cut the ribbon and said she was “proud” of the school.
Cllr Wilcox said: “Me and my fellow councillors worked for this.
"It is a wonderful educational opportunity for the pupils who come here and also for the area.
"Seeing this school right now shows that we did the right thing in supporting it."
Richard Drew, who is the acting head teacher, thanked everyone for attending the unveiling.
"It's wonderful to see so many people gathered here for this event," said the former Croesyceiliog School and Crownbridge teacher.
"As the only ASD school here, we have achieved a lot. All of our pupils come here full-time.
"I would like to thank Newport City Council and Cllr Wilcox for their support. I'd also like to thank staff, pupils and parents."
Parent Alice Davies said the school "has done wonders" for her daughter.
She said: "They've brought out the best in her.
"It's such a caring school."
