AN ARGUS reporter has published a book about Newport County’s Great Escape.

The Great Escape: Newport County 2016-17 tells the amazing full story of how Michael Flynn and his team beat the bookies’ odds and confounded their critics to secure their place in the English Football League.

Re-live the day that County pulled off their Great Escape and avoided relegation from the Football League

Andrew Penman, who has been covering Newport County AFC since joining the South Wales Argus sports desk back in 2007, said the book features “all-new interviews with those at the heart of the story”.

He said that, when writing the book, he has attempted to take readers behind the scenes – “onto the training ground, inside the dressing room and behind the manager’s office door” – to tell the full story of the Great Escape.

The 36-year-old said: “It’s been a decade of ups and downs for the club, but mostly ups with two unforgettable trips to Wembley and two priceless promotions.

“I’ve watched hundreds of matches from the less than luxurious press boxes at Spytty Park and Rodney Parade and at countless stadiums across England – from Braintree to Blackpool and Lewes to Leeds United.”

Mr Penman, who lives in Cardiff, said two matches stand out above all others during his time following the Exiles up and down the country.

He said: “The first is the 2013 Conference play-off final when the club finally completed its journey back to the big time after 25 years in the non-league wilderness thanks to goals from Christian Jolley and Aaron O’Connor.

“And the second is the final match of last season as Michael Flynn’s men staved off the looming threat of relegation in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable in front of a packed Rodney Parade.

“The journey that Flynn and his team went on in those final 12 matches was a joy to report on and it’s been a pleasure to relive the whole extraordinary story of the most turbulent of seasons.”

The book is published by St. David’s Press and is out on Thursday, December 14.

It’s available to pre-order online at and and will be on sale at the Newport County club shop and bookshops around Newport.
