Due to the awful weather conditions and the forecast for Friday, July 20, the committee agreed to postpone this event, although the main draw was to take place.

DUFFRYN JUNIOR SCHOOL: On Friday, July 13, Year 2 gave a wonderful performance in their play about animals in their natural habitat.

It was their dedication and role-play that was wonderful to watch and we congratulate the teaching staff for their hard work and the children in their great performance.

Councillor Trevor Watkins, as school governor, was pleased to have been invited and was impressed with the children in their roles and their acting ability. We then attended the infants' school for their end of the week Stars of the Week assembly. It was such a pleasure to see these children called up and to say why they were the stars of the week in their class.

NEWPORT SCOUT AND GUIDE GANG SHOW: On Saturday, July 14, we were invited to Duffryn High School to celebrate an informal evening with a disco and buffet and presentation of awards to the cast of the show.

We were entertained with a musical medley and slides of their Gang Show performed at the Dolman Theatre in May.

Also they presented a cheque to the Newport Seals Disabled Cub, who were really pleased with this collection which was made at the end of the show in May.

The evening was made special when the mayor and mayoress of Newport, Councillor Alan and Jane Morris, attended. Everyone was delighted and made a great stand on the stage for photographs to be taken.

Councillor Watkins and yours truly were requested to be in the photograph and the mayoress and myself were presented with beautiful flowers.

Councillor Watkins stated that he had seen the original Gang Show but this one was certainly better.

It was a great evening and we were pleased to have been invited.

DUFFRYN INFANTS: On Tuesday, July 17, we attended the infants' leavers' assembly. These children sang in Welsh and did a short play in Welsh. Again praise must go to Marcus the gymnastic coach who did a wonderful job with these children. Their performance was perfect and all in rhythm with their acrobatics and horse vaulting. They sang their leaving song, which was very sad, and there were quite a few tissues floating to the eyes of teachers and parents.

Mrs Morgan Jones with Mrs Ruth Jones and Mr Nigel Kelland gave certificates and a small gift to all pupils and again at the end they sang their farewell song.

These children will be going into the junior school in September and we wish them well.

Congratulations to the headmistress and staff for their dedication to the work involved.

DUFFRYN HIGH SCHOOL: Congratulations are in order for the pupils from this school who attended the first aid and lifesaving courses over two days in July.

Duffryn High School has trained 254 young people with the ability to save a life as part of the Young Lifesavers' Scheme.

The Welsh Assembly will keep first aid as part of the national curriculum.

Several lives have been saved including the case of young Lifesaver of the Year Maxine Farnden who saved the life of her diabetic mother.

DRATA: The next meeting is on Monday, at 7pm, at Duffryn Community Centre. All residents and tenants are welcome.
