MEMBERS of a Gwent racing club have said they are “completely devastated” after vandals wrecked all of their equipment.

Penhow Autograss Racing Club members arrived at their field near Magor Brewery on Wednesday to find four of their 4x4s, a tractor and three small containers with all of their windows smashed. The vehicles also had their indicators and aerials ripped off.

Club secretary Susan Riddoch, who is also the mother of chairman Nathan Riddoch, said the damage has “devastated” the group.

“We are only a small club, we have about 40 or so members,” she said.

“The farmer of the field where we are found the damage on Sunday but didn’t have anyone’s numbers. We were devastated when we saw what had happened. It’s mindless damage.”

The club was planning on holding its first race of 2018 in just a few week’s time on Sunday, April 15, but the damaged vehicles are used to race and will have to fixed beforehand.

“We made the decision to cancel the race which has a big impact on us,” said Mrs Riddoch.

“We are such a small club and we are already struggling to keep going anyway and this means we have lost revenue.

“We have to bring in our own machinery to race and now we have to make sure we get it fixed. Its around £1,000 in damage.”

The club is currently fundraising to try and help to get the vehicles and equipment repaired for the race, now rescheduled for Sunday, May 6.

“It’s just such a shame because this club means a lot to our members,” said Mrs Riddoch - who has been in the racing business for around 30 years.

“Racing is a hobby for our members. We have members from many different areas. It’s part of people’s lifestyles.

“It’s a shame that someone wanted to take that away.”

At the moment the group is clearing up glass from the field and organising for repairs.

So far they have had help from other racing groups who are offering to donate vehicles to race or perspex for the cars.

A JustGiving page has been set up to help raise £1,000 to cover the cost of the damage.
