BIKE safety is the focus of an event in Newport today.

BikeSafe is an all-Wales operation aimed at reducing the number of road traffic collisions involving motorcycles.

From now until October, officers from our Area Support Teams will be carrying out high visibility motorcycle patrols targeting those who ride in an anti-social manner which can cause serious, if not fatal, collisions.

Officers are at CMC Motorcycles in Newport until 4pm offering advice and giving out more information about BikeSafe.

Coordinator PC Leigh Williams said: “It is a national initiative to increase awareness of road safety and decrease accidents.

“We are trying to increase the number of riders who do further advanced riding.”

The BikeSafe workshops are a mix of theory and practical sessions and take place over two days.

PC Williams explained: “The first day is with us where you get taught road craft and then out on the road for advanced input.

Then day two is with the institute of advanced motorists then they take the candidates out on the second day.

“You find that throughout the day through the little briefings you see a big difference in their confidence and manner of driving.”

The event will run until 4pm today at CMC Motorcycles located on Estuary Road in Newport.
