THE Welsh Government’s neglect of transport has long been a blight on our region, with our failing train services, insufficient bus services and overcrowded roads making life difficult for everyone.

I have no doubt that this has held back our economy whilst Welsh Government has dithered.

These issues are now coming to a head and need to be resolved.

Sadly, it seems that the decision on the M4 may be about to be delayed once again.

The first minister, who had previously been committed to the black route M4 relief road, has now been lukewarm in his support.

The M4 decision cannot be allowed to drag on further because of the first minister’s decision to announce his resignation eight months in advance.

We have been waiting years for this decision and it cannot be delayed for another year because of internal Labour politics.

The Welsh Government’s dithering on the issue has seen the cost rise by nearly £500 million.

They cannot waste more taxpayers’ money by postponing the decision once again.

I am more optimistic about the South Wales Metro after I attended a technical briefing by Welsh Government officials.

As any of you who commute by train will know, the system has been relying on trains which are old, uncomfortable and unreliable.

The bidding process for the new franchise does seem to be focusing on these concerns, but we must ensure that the franchise is awarded on what is best for the whole of Wales, not only what suits Cardiff.

Newport should figure just as highly in considerations when planning the Metro and I support Nick Ramsay AM’s campaign for an interchange at Celtic Manor.

It is not all good news on the South Wales Metro.

It is meant to integrate all different forms of public transport, yet they are struggling with this.

The construction of Cardiff bus station has been delayed repeatedly and it has only recently been confirmed that construction will begin in June.

For commuters from our region into Cardiff, this bus station is vital for the South Wales Metro to be worthwhile.

Without it, commuting into and then around Cardiff will remain difficult for many.

The Welsh Government has a long track record of delaying infrastructure projects, this is not one they can allow to slip.

The South Wales Metro could be a great benefit to our region, but it remains to be seen if the Welsh Government can deliver.
