A NEW hub has opened in Llanhilleth to support recovering adults and serve the community, writes Tasmin Lockwood.

The Lounge, run by members of New Life Community, will act as a community space, offer group sessions for those recovering from drug and alcohol problems and hold workshops that look at budgeting to healthy living.

There will also be a cafe staffed by adults who use the charity’s services.

New Life Community is a one-year-old charity which runs supported housing in Blaenau Gwent, offering accommodation to men and women who are dealing with addiction and need support.

Local councillors have expressed support for the project. Cllr Joanne Collins cut the ribbon at the site yesterday to mark the official opening.

Louise O’Connor, who is leading the project alongside former artist Nina Goldsworth, hopes to run after school and homework clubs as well as adult workshops.

She said: “People are already asking to use the space for arts and crafts clubs, which is exactly what we want. We want it to be for the community.

“Nina has done an amazing job matching up colours and making a really attractive and positive atmosphere where people can come to relax.

“The people of Llanhilleth have seen shop after shop close down on the high street. We just wanted to do something for the people so they still had somewhere to go."

The centre will open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and one Saturday each month.
