UPDATE 3.30pm :

The road is now open.

A Gwent Police spokesman: "The injured man was the HGV driver. He is currently at the University Hospital of Wales and in a stable condition."


UPDATE 2.20pm :

One lane has reopened northbound, however there are still heavy delays in the area. 

A police officer at the scene said one man has been taken to The Heath hospital. They added that no arrests have been made and Western Power Distribution have been contacted about to the damage to the crossing.

A SERIOUS accident which left a lorry leaking fuel onto the A468 has closed junction 28 of the M4 motorway

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, are at the scene.

It is causing delays both ways between M4 J28 / A48 (Tredegar Park) and A468 Forge Road / Park View / Court Crescent (Bassaleg Roundabout).

A police spokesman said: "At approximately 12.40pm on Monday, 14th May, we were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Forge Road, Bassaleg, Newport, close to the junction 28 roundabout of the M4.

"A lorry had struck the central reservation, and was leaking fuel. Paramedics treated a man at the scene for serious injuries, and he was taken by ambulance to the University of Wales Hospital.

"Surrounding roads have been closed, including junction 28 of the M4, and diversions are now in place."

South Wales Ambulance have been contacted for comment.

Arriva Trains Wales have tweeted that rail replacement busses in the Pye Corner area may be affected.
