A seriously underweight peregrine falcon found grounded in a park has been rescued and is undergoing rehabilitation.

The charity was alerted after the young male bird of prey was found by passers-by on Sunday 6 May in Waunfawr Park, Cross Keys, near the cricket pavilion.

Dog walkers and other members of the public were surrounding the bird, which the RSPCA has said would have been a “very unusual sight” to come across on the ground of the park.

Members of the public confined the bird, before collection by the RSPCA. The charity has now transferred the animal to Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre in Tewkesbury.

The peregrine falcon was very underweight, but is now said to be eating well. The bird also had roundworm parasites, but it is hoped he will continue to respond well to care ahead of a return to the wild in the future.

Emma Smith, RSPCA inspector, said: “We’re grateful to the members of the public who found this bird of prey grounded at Waunfawr Park on Sunday 6 May. This would have been a very unusual sight for people to come across.

“The peregrine falcon was found to have no serious injuries – but was seriously underweight and needed urgent help.

“RSPCA Cymru was delighted to be able to rescue this troubled bird of prey, and transfer him to Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for care.

“We’re delighted to hear the bird is eating well, and really hope he’ll soon be fit and healthy enough to be returned to where he belongs – the wild.”
