GWENT Police have warned a scam which saw a man conned out of £53,000 "could be circulating in Gwent."
The warning comes after John Williams, 64, from Newbridge, received a call from a man purporting to be from Santander bank.
In the scam, which happened on Wednesday evening, Mr Williams said he was phoned on his landline and recognised the number to be Santander's.
The caller, claiming to be from the bank, said there had been a fraudulent £15,000 transaction and that he needed access to Mr Williams' laptop.
Believing the man to be genuine, Mr Williams allowed him remote access to three online bank accounts - his own, his wife's and a joint account.
A total of £53,000 was taken during the scam.
Yesterday, Gwent Police warned others to be vigilant.
The victim has confirmed with Santander the call was not legitimate.
A spokesman said: "We’re asking the public to remain vigilant following a scam that could be circulating in Gwent."
Anyone with information or concerns about fraud are asked to call 101 or report any suspicions to Action Fraud via their website www.actionfraud.police.uk or call them on 03001232040.
