A WARNING has been issued after a pupil from a Newport school was approached by an unknown man in a vehicle on her way home.
Bassaleg School took to social media to warn parents and others to be vigilant following the incident on Thursday.
Gwent Police said the incident which involved a 16-year-old girl happened at around 3pm.
A spokeswoman for the force said: "It was reported the incident occurred at approximately 3.10pm to 3:15pm on Forge Road, whereby the girl was asked her age and was offered a lift home, to which she refused.
"Officers would like to speak to the driver of the vehicle, which has been described as a convertible electric blue Vauxhall Tigra with the roof down.
"The driver has been described black male in his late 30s and was the only occupant.
"Whilst this was distressing for the girl we would like to stress she was not harmed.
"Officers have made contacted with the victim to ensure she is safe and well and no offences have been disclosed."
After the incident, Bassaleg School wrote on its Twitter page: "Please can we remind parents to be aware of the safety protocols for walking home, following well-trodden routes and where possible, walking in pairs or groups."
