A GWENT school is celebrating after being deemed "outstandingly happy".

Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg, Blaina, Blaenau Gwent is the first school in Wales to receive the accolade under the UK-wide Brilliant Schools initiative.

As part of the scheme, pupils are challenged to focus on how they can improve their own happiness and learning, and improve the wellbeing of their school.

The aim is to leave a sustainable, long-term wellbeing ethos driven by the children.

Head teacher Ann Bellis said: “We have seen a real increase in self-esteem, self-confidence and resilience in the Year 5 pupils who have led the rest of the school on this wellbeing journey and we are proud of our learners’ achievements.”

Ms Bellis added: "Children carried out random acts of kindness and made a difference to their class, their school, their families and their communities."

Mike Martin, the Brilliant Schools co-ordinator for Wales, visited the school to train pupils and staff, with Year 5 pupils later passing on the advice to other pupil and parents.

Sion Roberts, Year 5 teacher and deputy head said: “ The pupils’ positive mind-set has not only impacted on their communication and leadership skills but has enhanced all areas of their learning.”

Next year pupils from the school hope to visit other schools to share their experiences and to link up with a local care home so they can spread their happiness.
