*UPDATE 9.10pm*

Following verbal abuse and antisocial behaviour aimed at fire crews battling the grass fire, Gwent Police have issued a dispersal order for the area of Twmbarlwm.

In a statement they said: "Patrolling officers can direct any trouble makers from the area. If they return, they may be arrested."

The dispersal order will run until 5pm on Saturday.

FIRES continued to burn on a mountain overnight as firefighters fought to get it under control.

This morning, four fire crews remain at Twmbarlwm mountain after wildfires started yesterday

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said last night: "Further crews have been mobilised to attend numerous additional fires at Twmbarlwm mountain and Cwmcarn Forest Drive.

"They are supported by an ATV and Water Bowser and are engaging in fire-fighting activity across the mountain. We are working closely with police to identify potential criminal activity following reports of deliberate fire setting."

The service experienced very high call volumes throughout the service area from about 2pm yesterday.

He added: "We continue to work with our partners Natural Resource Wales to patrol and monitor the area for hotspots. We would like to thank all the Firefighters and Control Team involved for their tireless work over this period."

Steve Morgan, head of south east Wales operations for Natural Resources Wales, said: “Wildfires pose a serious risk to our officers, the firefighters who have to tackle these outbreaks, as well as people living and working in the area. They can also have a major impact on wildlife.

“The fire at Cwmcarn Forest has affected more than 200ha of forestry. The prolonged dry weather has increased the risk of such fires across Wales and the Cwmcarn Forest fire is unprecedented in south Wales with vast areas destroyed, including tens of thousands of newly planted trees."

The fire service thanked groups and members of the public who have offered support and refreshments to crews, but have asked people to refrain from attending the scene as there is still an ongoing safety risk.

They also ask people to remain vigilant and if you see any suspicious activity or want to report a deliberate fire, call 101 or report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The spokesman added: "We will be fully investigating these fires with our partners in South Wales and Gwent Police following completion of these incidents."
