NEWPORT County AFC legend Gary Warren is convinced that his former club will bounce back from Saturday’s 6-0 humiliation at the hands of his new club Yeovil Town.

Warren, who captained County to promotion from the Conference South in 2010 and to the FA Trophy final at Wembley in 2012, enjoyed a surprisingly comfortable afternoon in his first match against the side he left six years ago.

The 34-year-old centre-back was expecting a tough test at Rodney Parade but the Glovers ran riot as Michael Flynn’s men were humiliated in front of their own fans.

It was a result that left Warren with mixed emotions and he’s certain that the Exiles will recover quickly.

“It was nice to be back,” he said. “It was good to see a few familiar faces and friends that I obviously haven’t seen for a long time.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it and obviously winning the game makes it a little bit more special.

“For us it was a good all round team performance and as a defender when you go three or four up you’ve got a license to relax and have a steady game.

“It was a bit difficult for me because I have so many fond memories [of County] but that's football. They’ll go again next week and throughout the season they’ll turn teams over just as comfortably.

“They’ll bounce back, no doubt about that,” he added. “They’ve got a good squad and a good manager so there’s no problem there.

“I don’t know him [Flynn] that well but I see the way he conducts himself and I can see that he’s got a group of boys working hard for him.

“You can get a good feel for someone and how they approach games and you can see he’s doing a good job.”

South Wales Argus:

Warren enjoyed interacting with the home fans on Saturday.

“I miss the people – the fans especially,” he said. “You always get a good atmosphere.

“It was obviously difficult to generate that kind of atmosphere [on Saturday] but usually it’s a little bit hostile and they make it tough for teams.

“I do miss the place and it was good to have that craic with the fans.

“I’ve always had a good rapport with the fans so it was very nice to be welcomed back.

“I’ve followed things since I left and it’s still one of the first results I look out for.”

After six years at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Bristol-born Warren is happy to be closer to home with Yeovil.

“It’s been brilliant,” he said. “It’s like a breath of fresh air for me and I’m thoroughly enjoying the way we’re playing and the way we’ve started the season.”
