THE father of the world champion boxer Joe Calzaghe has died surrounded by his family in hospital.

Enzo Calzaghe, who was born in Italy, had been in ill health and died this afternoon.

The Calzaghe family released a statement, saying: "The family are devastated to have to announce the death of our beloved Enzo.

"Joe and all of the Calzaghe family would like to thank the public for their well wishes and kind thoughts, especially the outpouring of support from within the boxing community.

"Enzo led an incredible life both inside and outside of the boxing gym and his loss is a devastating one for the entire Calzaghe family.

"We please ask that people respect our privacy at this difficult time."

Former Argus writer Michael Pearlman also confirmed the trainer's death, saying: "He was one of Britain's most talented and loved boxing trainers.

"He was surrounded by his family in hospital.

"The family have told me that he died."

Former boxer Bradley Pryce also paid tribute to his former trainer, saying he was "loved by everyone".

"From the age of 10 I was boxing in Newbridge," he said.

"He was a fantastic person and a trainer. We had been together for many years after that.

"I feel heart broken over what has happened. My thoughts are with his family."

News of Mr Calzaghe's death has triggered thousands of tributes online.

Sarah Reach said on the Argus Facebook page: "I am gutted.

"He came across as a proper gentleman. RIP."

Shaun Woodward posted: "I met him once. What a true legend."

Rachy Jones said: "R.I.P Enzo. Heart goes out to you and the fam Joe."

Some media outlets had incorrectly reported that Calzaghe senior had died on the weekend.

Niece Carrie Calzaghe then took to Facebook, saying: "Enzo Calzaghe my uncle, has not passed away, this is false news, he is alive but very poorly. Please allow space for our family at this time.

"He is alive and still fighting. We will keep you posted and let you know how he is doing when we can."

Mr Calzaghe taught boxing at Newbridge Boxing Club for many years and was credited with training his son in boxing, who would later become an undefeated world champion.

In his career, Calzaghe senior trained three world champion boxers.
