TRIBUTES have continued to pour in for legendary boxing trainer Enzo Calzaghe, following his death.

The sixty-nine-year-old father of undefeated world champion Joe had been in ill health and died surrounded by his family in hospital on Monday.

Big names in the boxing world paid their respects to the MBE winner yesterday.

Two-time light-heavyweight world champion Nathan Cleverly wrote on Twitter of Mr Calzaghe: “A teacher, a trainer and a great man.

“He predicted early on in my teen years that I would become a world champion.

“He taught me so much.

“God tests everyone. God bless, Enzo.”

Mixed martial artist, who currently fights for the UFC: “To the man who created my hero. Rest in peace Enzo Calzaghe.”

Argus readers also paid tribute to him online.

Annette Mullins said: “Rest in peace Enzo, thoughts are with the family.”

And Karl Davies said: “One of the greatest trainers boxing has ever had.
“You will be missed, legend.
“We will not have another trainer like Enzo. Time for you to rest in peace, Enzo.”

While Lisa Thomas added: “Deepest sympathies to all the family. RIP champ.”

The Calzaghe family released a statement following Mr Calzaghe’s death which said: “The family are devastated to have to announce the death of our beloved Enzo.

“Joe and all of the Calzaghe family would like to thank the public for their well wishes and kind thoughts, especially the outpouring of support from within the boxing community.

“Enzo led an incredible life both inside and outside of the boxing gym and his loss is a devastating one for the entire Calzaghe family.

“We please ask that people respect our privacy at this difficult time.”

Mr Calzaghe was a world class boxing trainer, guiding three world champions at one point.

The best, though, was his son, Joe, the undefeated world super middle weight champion, who enjoyed huge success for almost two decades with his father by his side.
