CHILDREN at Willowtown Primary School, Ebbw Vale, took part in a fitness event run by an Olympic athlete as a part of the Super Schools programme.

Julian Golley, who won a Triple Jump gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and parkour specialist Alex Grinter visited the school to help promote an active lifestyle.

The children had the opportunity to take photos with the stars, as well as taking part in a fitness session run by Mr Golley.

They were then treated to a free-running demonstration from Mr Grinter, who ended his run with a flip over several students and a teacher.

Willowtown deputy headteacher Emma Thomas said: “I think it’s really important that our children get to see ordinary people that have made extraordinary lives for themselves through hard work. It’s a really good message for our boys and girls.

“Health and wellbeing is a massive part of Welsh education at the moment. The healthier and more active the children are, the better learners they become.”

Mr Golley has been working with Super Schools for the last 20 years.

He said: “We aim to get kids active and keep them healthy. It’s about taking part and having fun. It’s also a fundraising day. Prior to the event they have gone out and raised money that goes back into schools.”

Mr Grinter added: “As well as helping the kids to be active, we try to inspire them and let them know they can achieve whatever they want to achieve.”

The children get sponsored for their fitness class, with the highest fundraisers winning medals.
