VOLUNTEERS joined Torfaen council’s Play Service workers to repaint areas of Cwmbran for the benefit of local children.

The underpass at Northville playing fields and the old bandstand at Pontnewydd Park in Cwmbran have been repainted with colourful murals and images.

About fifteen volunteers joined the Play Service workers and took part in the project.

The work was done as part of an ongoing programme to encourage children and young people to feel safer when using these routes to travel around their community.

Play Service manager Julian Davenne said: “The idea is to make communities brighter and safer for children.

“There are areas in the Cwmbran area that aren’t that nice to walk through.

“The areas that we have done by the train station in Cwmbran had so much graffiti and abusive language sprayed on the walls. It was so unpleasant.

“We thought that we would go and brighten them all up. “

Councillor Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Children and Young People on Torfaen Council, said: “By painting up these areas with bright and colourful designs we hope that children will feel safer using them to walk to school or to play in their local area.

“The play workers and volunteers have done an amazing job and I would like to thank them all for their hard work.”

Torfaen Play Services provide activities for children and young people aged five to 15 years in the form of after school clubs, half term and play schemes.
