THE Rhymney Brewery, based in Blaenavon, has scooped a major national award from CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. In its annual awards for the Champion Beer of Britain Rhymney Dark received the silver award in the Mild Ales section.

The beer, which is a classic south Wales Dark ale that was once so popular throughout the Valleys and across the region, is available at the brewery’s eleven tied houses and through its free trade outlets. It is also available in bottled form in some supermarkets.

Managing director Steve Evans expressed his delight in receiving a certificate to mark the award, which was handed over at the brewery by CAMRA’s liaison officer with the brewery, Martyn Groucutt. Mr Evans said that he was proud to make a range of beers that followed classic British styles, including Hobbyhorse bitter which is brewed to the original Victorian recipe from the original Rhymney Brewery which was taken over and closed by Whitbread back in the 1960s.

The current brewery was established by Steve in 2005 and was originally based in Dowlais Top. As it grew in popularity it relocated to Blaenavon, where it is situated in the World Heritage Site, near the Big Pit mining museum and the Blaenavon Iron Works.
