MORE than 180 children from schools across Torfaen took part in the annual EFL Trust kids cup Torfaen qualifier at Cwmbran Stadium.

The competition, organised by the Newport County in the Community programme in partnership with Torfaen Sports Development, saw 20 schools enter, including last year’s regional champions, George Street Primary School.

The four teams that reached the semi-final stages were George Street, Padre Pio RC, Garnteg and Croesyceiliog primary schools.

Garnteg Primary narrowly beat Padre Pio RC 3-1 in the final and went on to lift the Torfaen EFL Trust kids cup 2018.

All semi-finalists will now compete in the Gwent-wide finals at Newport International Sports Village on October 22.

If successful, they will represent Newport County AFC at the penultimate League Two South competition, before a trip to Wembley Stadium to play the finals.

Torfaen Executive Member for Children and Young People,Councillor Amanda Owen said: “This year it has been great to see so many primary schools taking part in what is a fantastic sports occasion for young boys and girls across Torfaen.

“County in the Community and Torfaen Sports Development do such a fantastic job in organising this event year on year, with this being the fifth successful competition to date. I would like to thank each and every team that participated and congratulations and good luck to George Street, Padre Pio RC, Garnteg and Croesyceiliog, representing Torfaen schools in the next round.”
