RESIDENTS have voiced their anger as even more travellers move into a popular park.

Eight caravans were originally spotted two weeks ago parked up in Black Ash Park, in Lliswerry, Newport.

And within the last few days, an additional 12 caravans have now joined the illegal encampment.

Barthropp Street resident Marjorie Johnson said she wanted the travellers moved on quickly.

“They have been here for two weeks and they have not been moved on,” said the 83-year-old.

“There are 20 caravans in that field. I saw them when they first came here. It was bad then but now it is worse.

“No one should be able to park up on a field without permission.”

Lawrence Bladon, who was walking his dog, said he was “annoyed” because he can now only walk part of the field.

“I have a border collie and they need a lot of exercise,” said the 54-year-old.

“I am in the park for an hour every day. This is no longer the case.

“The travellers have taken up about a quarter of the field, meaning you can only walk in certain parts.

“I am annoyed about it.”

Another Barthropp Street resident, who did not wish to be named, added: “People used to come to the park when they wanted. It is a good way to unwind.

“You could just walk for ages - but you cannot do that now.

“We all want our park back.”

A spokeswoman from Newport City Council said the authority "shares the frustration of residents over the illegal encampment".

She said: "However, it has to follow the proper legal processes and going through the courts can take time. Legal proceedings have been issued and the council is waiting for a judge to grant a possession order. Security measures were in place to try and prevent illegal access to the park and these will be reviewed.

"Newport City Council is working with other local authorities to explore options for a regional transit site for Gypsies and Travellers who are on route to other destinations."

Travellers were also seen in Port Road and a Tredegar Park overflow car park last month.
